Reading Room

Book Review: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

This book follows a group of researchers – a biologist, a psychologist, an anthropologist, and a surveyor – who venture out to go to Area X, which is a mysterious place and uninhabited by humans. Everything about Area X is mystifying and there were around 11 (failed?) expeditions before this. The story is told from the viewpoint of the biologist:

What is Area X and why are humans not able to live there? What is the connection between the biologist and the previous expeditions? What is the crawler? Will they be able to unlock the secrets of Area X?

End Verdict

This book is great for readers who are interested in a fast-paced action-packed novel. If you love nature, you will love the natural bent here. The author has also focused on how a group of people may act when they know that they can trust neither each other nor the basic things we take for granted such as the air around us. Even though the place is on Earth, the author has been able to bring about an alien feel to it. Even the mundane has a surreal feel to it!

The book is part of a series so do not expect any big revelations here. If you are into series then you would enjoy reading this book, which has also been made into a 2018 movie with the same name. (Psst, Natalie Portman is in the lead!)

Ratings: 4 out of 5 stars

Recommendation: Read (with controlled expectations)!
